Treatment

One common treatment for varicose veins and spider veins is sclerotherapy. This is a non-surgical procedure in which a solution is injected into the problem veins in order to cause them to close. Sclerotherapy is done in-office using small needles. For larger and more complex varicose vein problems, laser closure may be necessary. During this procedure the skin is numbed before treatment and a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein being treated. Laser energy is emitted through this fiber and it causes the vein to close. Then blood naturally will re-route to healthy veins. The time to perform the procedure varies based on how much treatment is necessary.

The Vein Center at Portland Surgical Associates uses the latest technology available. We use the Dornier Medilas D SkinPulse S/D940, a state-of-the-art, high performance laser. This unit has a "Light Guide Protection System" that immediately powers off the laser if excessive carbonization occurs at the applicator tip thereby reducing the risk of tissue damage. We encourage you to get more information about this state-of-the-art technology by visiting the manufacturer's website.

Although complications may occur with any medical treatment, sclerotherapy has a good safety record. You should always discuss the risks and treatment alternatives with your physician.
