There are a variety of treatment options for the various stages of chronic venous insufficiency. One common treatment for spider veins and smaller varicose veins is sclerotherapy. This is a non-surgical procedure in which a solution is injected into the problem veins causing them to close and eventually be reabsorbed. Sclerotherapy is done in the office using very small needles for the injections.
For larger and more complex varicose vein problems, some form of vein closure or ablation may be necessary. During this procedure the skin over and around the vein to be treated is made numb using a local anesthetic. A catheter is then placed inside the vein and either radiofrequency or laser energy is delivered through this catheter causing the vein to be closed. The blood will be "re-routed" to healthier veins.
